Muon Measurement with an Ice Cherenkov Tank at the South Pole

چکیده

A 1.4 m3 ice Cherenkov tank was installed at the South Pole during the 2000-2001 austral summer. The penetrating muon rate was measured for three different incident angles with a scintillator muon telescope incorporating the tank as absorber. The freezing process was monitored and the detector was calibrated with the penetrating muons. The calibration is compared to a GEANT simulation of the detector. Signals coincident with air showers have also been recorded using a trigger from the surrounding SPASE-2 (South Pole Air Shower Experiment-2) array.

The muon flux at the South-Pole was measured for five zenith angles, 0◦, 15◦, 35◦, 82.13◦ and 85.15◦ with a scintillator muon telescope incorporating ice Cherenkov tank detectors as the absorber. We compare the measurements with other data and with calculations.

Cosmic Ray Results from the IceTop Air Shower Array

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole, is an air-shower array which will finally consist of 160 ice Cherenkov tanks at 80 stations spread over an area of 1 km. Currently 40 stations are deployed and taking data. The detector is designed to cover the energy range above the knee up to about 10 eV and study the mass composition of primary cosmic rays. In...

The ICECUBE prototype string in AMANDA

The Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) is a high-energy neutrino telescope. It is a lattice of optical modules (OM) installed in the clear ice below the South Pole Station. Each OM contains a photomultiplier tube (PMT) that detects photons of Cherenkov light generated in the ice by muons and electrons. ICECUBE is a cubickilometer-sized expansion of AMANDA currently being built ...

We investigate the development of electromagnetic cascades in ice using a GEANT Monte Carlo simulation. We examine the Cherenkov pulse that is generated by the charge excess that develops and propagates with the shower. This study is important for the RICE experiment at the South Pole, as well as any test beam experiment which seeks to measure coherent Cherenkov radiation from an electromagneti...
